Eudora Teacher Booked Into Jail for Sex Crime Charges

Kurt M. Brundage, 32, former East High School teacher and current Eudora teacher, was arrested in the 1500 block of South George Washington Boulevard in Wichita, on sex with a minor crime charges, school officials said on Tuesday. Brundage, who lives in Lawrence, came to Eudora, in August 2011. The district has put Brundage on paid administrative leave while the investigation proceeds. A substitute teacher is handling his classes.

According to Wichita police records, he was booked into Sedgwick County Jail on allegations of three counts of rape, one count of attempted rape, two counts of aggravated indecent liberties with a child and one count of electronic solicitation. Three of the four rape counts were listed as “circumstances unknown,” one of the rape counts was listed as “sexual intercourse without consent and with use of force.” The two aggravated indecent liberties counts are: “offender believes child” is 14 or older and less than 16. All of the alleged crimes occurred in Sedgwick County, said Wichita police Lt. Jeff Weible, head of the Wichita-Sedgwick County Exploited and Missing Child Unit.

Records indicate the time period of the alleged crimes is between January 2010 and February 2012. In a report, dated February 29, a woman reported “her daughter being touched inappropriately” by Brundage. At the time of the initial charge, the alleged victim was 15, Weible said.

“The charges don’t involve a Eudora student,” said Kristin Magette, Eudora Public Schools spokeswoman. She said the charges “seem to be related to a relationship that happened in the Wichita area.”

"This is a deeply troubling situation to learn of, but I want you to know that we have a host of procedures and programs in place to protect the best interests of our students," said G.A. Buie, Eudora High principal. "Any student with concerns or sensitive information to share about Brundage or any other adult is urged to contact the Eudora Police Department or visit with one of our excellent mental health professionals at EHS."

Brundage was released Saturday on $100,000 bond, officials said. Any attempts to contact Brundage about the allegations were not successful. Official charges could be filed against Brundage at a March 26 court appearance.
